Quick Take

A reliable monochrome laser printer with a good selection of features.

HP’s spring lineup announced in May consisted of a multitude of different products targeted at varying markets. We reviewed the Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One, the lone consumer focused product in the summer and now we will share our review of the LaserJet Pro 400 M401 series.

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401 series consists of three single function monochrome laser printers designed with small and medium businesses in mind. All three models offer their business clients network connectivity, web-connected applications, HP ePrint and Apple AirPrint for a variety of mobile offerings.

Build and Design

The LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn offers a small footprint and will easily fit on a desk or shelf. The approximate dimensions in non use is 14 x 14 x 11-inches, but you’ll need to consider the extended paper tray when set for legal sized documents, the raised control panel and the extended multipurpose tray which can take the dimensions closer to 14 x 25 x 15-inches.

Speaking of the control panel, the M401dn offers a 3.5-inch touchscreen for navigating the standalone device menus as well as the web connected application. This model doesn’t offer wireless (unless you upgrade to the M401dw), but it does offer built-in networking which still allows business customers the opportunity to print with mobile and web-connection applications.

Press the large button at the base of the 150-sheet output bin and pull out to access the single piece black toner cartridge. The M401dn comes with a HP80A cartridge which yields approximately 2700 pages. You can also purchase high capacity HP 80X replacement cartridges which yields approximately 6900 pages.

Pull the handle on the front of the M401dn to reveal the 50-sheet multipurpose tray which can handle a variety of media sized from 3 x 5-inches to 8.5 x 14-inches. The 250-sheet input tray is located directly beneath the multipurpose tray and can handle media sized from 4 x 6-inches to 8.5 x 14-inches. The front side USB port is also located in this area.

All connections are found on the back of the M401dn as well as access to the paper path. The M401dn can be connected via a high-speed USB 2.0 or Ethernet 10/100/1000 Base-TX connection.
