Print Speed and Quality Tests
The Epson WorkForce 845 was able to print 13 black and white pages per minute on the default setting and printed 40 full pages of text within 2 minutes and 58 seconds. It printed the first page on the same setting within 12 seconds and the average time it took to print one page was 3 seconds. These are pretty speedy results for an inkjet in this class.

We also tested how long it took the AIO to print color text pages on the default setting, and the results were much slower. It took a total of 7 minutes and 25 seconds to print 40 full color text pages at an average of 5 ppm. The first page printed within 15 seconds and it took an average of 10 seconds for each page to print.

We expected draft (economy) printing to be faster, and it was. It took 8 seconds for the first page to print and an average of 3 seconds for each subsequent page. Forty pages printed within 2 minutes and 6 seconds at an average of 18 pages per minute.

Photo printing speeds were average. We printed a 4 x 6 standard quality photo within 1 minute and 51 seconds and a high quality 4 x 6 photo in 2 minutes and 31 seconds. We printed a standard quality 8.5 x 11 photo in 3 minutes and 9 seconds and a high quality photo of the same size in 6 minutes and 2 seconds.

Quality wise, the standard quality black text prints were very good; they appeared dark and crisp. The black draft text prints were suitable as well. Although, when economy mode was enabled, the text appeared to not only get lighter, but to change font type. The color pages were also good for all intents and purposes.

The photo printing was another thing entirely. It’s not bad, but it could be so much better. We noticed that when compared to other AIO inkjets and the photo printing from them, the Epson WorkForce 845 gets overshadowed. Images appeared a bit washed out and the contrast was clearly lacking. But like we said, the quality isn’t that bad – it’s just not as good as other inkjets in its class. As a side note, it also didn’t matter if we selected “high quality” or “best quality;” they all looked the same.

We’d also like to note that the fax machine works just fine and that the scanner was extremely fast. One of our pet peeves is a slow scanner, and it was nice to have the media scanned within 5-10 seconds. The previous generation WorkForce 840 performed much slower in terms of scanning.
