When you grow up in a household that is all about taking photos, printing photos, and displaying photos, you start to realize the value of a digital camera early on.  But what about the value of a portable printer dedicated to the sole purpose of printing photos from said camera?

That’s where the Canon SELPHY line steps in with their newest addition: the Canon SELPHY CP790.  Truly portable and simple to use – thanks to the lime green storage bucket – the SELPHY CP790 can print on four different medias in as fast as 47 seconds.

But will the photo quality live up to the Canon tradition?  Be the first to find out by reading our full review!

  • Print speeds: 4×6 photo in 47 seconds

  • 3-inch LCD
  • Built-in memory card reader
  • Prints on four different medias
  • OS compatibility: Windows, Mac OS X

So I think I may be the exact person Canon’s design team had in mind when they were designing the SELPHY CP790 because the minute I pulled the lime green bucket printer out of its box, I was enamored.  And even as I traded jokes with my coworkers about how it reminded us of Mr. Bucket, I was harboring a secret desire to grab the SELPHY and run home.

So why was I so excited about the SELPHY CP790?  It might be because I love to “hide” my treasures; all my jewelry boxes had secret compartments.  And thanks to the clever new design that locks the printer into place on top of an empty storage basket, it felt like old times.

And although this compartment may not be a secret, users can store all essential materials inside said basket: extra supplies, optional battery pack, AC adapter, USB cord, memory cards, etc.  The basket also has a handle and the SELPHY logo on the outside.

The printer itself is no slouch; it has a 3-inch color LCD and Canon’s Easy Scroll Wheel along with five easy buttons: on, edit, back, menu and print.

On the front of the CP790, there is a pull down door that hides the built-in memory card reader and the paper opening.  The CP790 built-in card reader is compatible with SD,  miniSD, SDHC, miniSDHC, MultiMediaCard, MMCplus, MMCmobile, RS-MMC, CompactFlash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Dup and Memory Stick PRO Duo cards.

The paper opening is where users insert one of the two paper cassettes: postcard size or card size.  The paper cassette needs to match the ink cassette when printing: the SELPHY CP790 comes with a trial postcard ink cassette so you would need to use the postcard size paper cassette.

The ink cassette is loaded into the printer on the right side of the CP790.

On the left side of the CP790 users will find the connection ports: the AC adapter, PictBridge and USB.

There is an option for running the SELPHY CP790 on battery power; the optional battery connection is found on the back of the CP790.
