Canon imageCLASS MF5950dw Review: First Look

Canon introduced seven new imageCLASS products targeted at the small office, home office market in July and for the first time offered wireless connectivity standard on four of the seven units.

One of the four new units offering Wi-Fi is the Canon imageCLASS MF5950dw,  a 4-in-1 device featuring print, scan, copy and fax functionality as well as print speeds up to 35 ppm, automatic duplexing, 250-sheet paper tray with a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, 50-sheet ADF and a front side USB port.

The imageCLASS MF5950dw resembles previous generation imageCLASS models with the white gray exterior , black accents and control panel and a somewhat boxy build with the approximate dimensions of 15 x 19 x 17 inches.

The imageCLASS MF5950dw offers businesses some valuable features starting with the 50-sheet automatic document feeder. The ADF can copy, scan and fax single and double sided documents up to legal size allowing customers to walk away from the machine to get other tasks done.

The full sized control panel is centered around the animated 5-line backlit LCD and offers 19 one-touch speed dials, four main device keys, an alphanumeric key pad, four directional navigation pad and 20 additional quick keys. The front USB port is located directly beneath the control panel.

While the imageCLASS MF5950dw maybe only print in monochrome, the 24-bit CIS flatbed scanner can in both black and white and color with a maximum optical resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The flatbed can handle documents up to 8.5 x 11 inches and also offers a range of features including scan to USB, scan to e-mail and scan to SMB.

Lift up under the control panel and then press the large gray button located on the 150-sheet output bin to open the front of the imageCLASS MF5950dw and access the single black toner cartridge. Canon offers both a standard capacity 119 cartridge with an approximate yield of 2,100 pages and a high capacity 119 II cartridge with an approximate yield of 6,400 pages.

The imageCLASS MF5950dw has a pull out 50-sheet multipurpose tray for more unique media located on the front of the device. The 250-sheet paper cassette can paper sizes up to legal. Customers can add an optional 500-sheet cassette for a total paper capacity of 800 sheets.

All connections are found on the back of the imageCLASS MF5950dw including the fax, USB and Ethernet ports. This device also offers wireless connectivity standard.

The Canon imageCLASS MF5950dw is available now through Canon and authorized vendors for the suggested retail price of $399.

Customers can also purchase toner cartridges through Canon. A standard capacity 119 cartridge will set users back $87.

The Canon imageCLASS MF5950dw offers a 1-year limited exchange/carry in warranty. Extended warranties are available.
