The Brother HL-3170cdw is Energy Star qualified and I found the energy use to be consistent with what we’ve seen from competitor’s models in the same class when printing, but found the sleep mode a little higher than normal.
In ready mode, the HL-3170cdw pulls about 21W of energy. When it drops into deep sleep mode, the HL-3170cdw pulls in about 14W of energy.
Whether printing black & white or color documents, the HL-3170cdw was fairly consistent, staying in a range of 600-800W throughout the print job. The printer’s energy use can spike higher than that, usually when warming up (aka heating the toner).

Like its monochrome counterparts, the Brother HL-6180dw and HL-5470dw, the HL-3170cdw is a no nonsense printer. If you want large displays, web connected apps or front side USB ports you are looking in the wrong place.
With that said, the HL-3170cdw does offer reliable, quality color printing at a competitive price point. With black and white/color print speeds up to 23 ppm, automatic duplexing, a 250-sheet paper tray, built-in network connectivity and mobile print apps (if set up over wired or wireless network) for $279.99, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better deal.
