When it comes to making your PC faster, you really have two storage options – an SSD, or the Western Digital Velociraptor. Praised for its higher capacities and lower price points than solid state media, this line is a favorite of PC enthusiasts everywhere – and now it’s available in a 1TB version.
The Velociraptor series of drives are actually 2.5-inch drives (like those you find in most laptops) wrapped in what Western Digital calls its “Ice Pack” enclosure. It’s basically a huge heatsink designed to keep this drive cool – an important consideration given the fact that it spins at a whopping 10,000 RPM.
WD brought the Velociraptor over to the consumer side for enthusiasts, but its underpinnings are firmly in the high-end enterprise market. With the introduction of the new 1TB model, WD is putting the 600GB (the former high-end model) Velociraptor out to pasture; going forward, units will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on some relatively cheap, relatively speedy storage, then good news – the new drives are available today. The 250GB model will retail for $159.99, while the 500GB and 1TB versions will retail for $209.99 and $319.99, respectively.
