Western Digital has three main product lines in their desktop hard drive segment: Caviar Black, Caviar Blue and Caviar Green. The Caviar Green drives focus on low energy use and power efficiency, the Caviar Blue drives focus on value in terms of cost and storage, and the Caviar Black drives focus on performance. Lots and lots of performance.
WD first brought the 2TB drive to market some time ago in the Caviar Green line. Despite focusing on efficiency rather than performance, we found it performed admirably in our tests. That makes this new drive, a 2TB Caviar Black, all the more exciting. The drive features four of WD’s 500GB platters.
The drive features a lot of the same properties as the Caviar Green version, but it’s been juiced up with a 7200RPM speed upgrade. The drive will be available shortly from local and online retailers at a $299 price point, the same starting price for the original 2TB Caviar Green.
WD also released an updated version of their performance server drive, the RE4. The RE4 version of this higher-speed drive focuses more on 24×7 reliability for businesses looking to store critical apps. Western Digital says that this drive is currently being shopped around to OEMs; it’ll probably end up on sites like Newegg at some point too, since you can find the RE4 Caviar Green version there now.
