Tuesday is shaping up to be an interesting day for flash memory storage solutions. Earlier this morning Seagate revealed its new product line of solid state drives (SSD). Now Western Digital and SanDisk have announced a partnership to offer a new line of hybrid SSDs.
SanDisk is supplying a SanDisk iSSD storage device for the WD Black SSHD, which both companies boast is currently the world’s thinnest 2.5-inch SSHD solution. The introduction of SanDisk technology should help the WD Black to lower power consumption and cost, while maintaining the slim form factor that the device is known for.
About Black Solid Sate Hybrid Drives
The WD Black 5mm SSHD offers 500GB of capacity, WD also notes that the drive consumers 50 percent less power than a normal HDD. The drive is complemented by a low-profile SanDisk iSSD, which is built on a 19-nanometere processor technology.
The WD Black 5mm SSHDs are currently shipping to OEMs. Western Digital is also shipping 7mm and 9.5mm SSHDs variants to OEMs for portable devices.
