The next console generation is well under way and that means it’s time for console trade-in deals. Nothing beats getting rid of that old piece of hardware for a shiny new gaming rig. While this has become a time-tested tradition in the gaming industry, Microsoft has decided to put their own spin on it; they want your old PlayStation 3.
Microsoft detailed the deal in an email to customers, explaining that now through March 2 the tech giant will be offering $100 in-store credit for old PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E home consoles. Of course as with any other deal there are a few catches, the $100 in-store credit is only applicable towards the purchase of an Xbox One, and the deal is only available in participating Microsoft stores. Still it’s clear that Microsoft’s newest deal is a dig at the expense of Sony.
Since the Xbox One retails for $499 normally compared to the PS4 at $399, this trade-in discount would bring the two consoles to the same price point. However, as neither the PS4 nor Xbox One are backwards compatible with the PS3 and Xbox 360 games respectively, the choice of whether to trade in or not for the new console generation so soon after launch may be more difficult for players with extensive game libraries.
The systems to be traded in must include all the original accessories, including the power adapter, and must be in working order (though Microsoft will be recycling the PS3s). The promotion will last until March 2nd, and is only valid in Microsoft Stores.
