Toshiba Announces New Tecra and Portege Business Notebooks

Toshiba has announced a new line of Tecra and Portege business-class notebooks featuring the latest Intel processors and a battery life of up to 11 hours.

Toshiba says its new line of notebooks build on what the company developed with its previous R700 ultraportable notebook. The three new notebooks announced include the Portege R830, the Tecra R840, and the Tecra R850. All are equipped with second-generation Intel Core series processors, 7200RPM hard drives or SSDs, and optional AMD Radeon discrete graphics with up to 1GB of video RAM. Other standard features include a range of standard input/output ports including USB 3.0, eSATA, DisplayPort or HDMI, ExpressCard, Gigabit Ethernet, and docking station connectors, plus other technologies such as Intel Wireless Display technology (Wi-Di).

The notebooks themselves are built using a fiberglass-reinforced casing with a honeycomb rib structure, which makes them strong and lightweight. The Portege R830 in particular features a magnesium alloy casing.

Tecra R840

The Tecra R840 has a 14-inch display; it is 25 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than its predecessor, the Tecra M11. It is available with second-generation Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 multi-core processors. Toshiba rates the battery life up to 11 hours when equipped with an SSD. The Tecra R840 starts at $899.

Tecra R850

The Tecra R850 series is similar to the R840 in design except it has a larger 15.6-inch display. Starting at $879, it is also available with Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 multi-core processors. It comes with integrated Intel HD graphics or 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6450M graphics. With an SSD it can achieve up to 10 hours of battery life.

Portege R830

Starting at $889, Toshiba says the Portege R830 is the thinnest 13.3-inch full-performance laptop containing an integrated DVD drive. It starts at 3.1 pounds and is just one inch thin. It uses a new technology called Intel Airflow technology, which situates the heat-producing chips inside the computer in a row to facilitate cooling. It is also rated for over 10 hours of battery life.
The R830 is configurable with Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 full-performance processors and has integrated Intel HD graphics. Configurable models start at $1,099.

Consumer Models

Toshiba is also making available some consumer versions of the above notebooks, which will be msising some features but naturally come at a lower price. The Portege R835 does not have an ExpressCard slot, a docking station port, and comes with just a one-year warranty instead of the three-year that is standard on the rest of the announced notebooks.

Pricing and Availability

The new Toshiba Portege and Tecra business class notebooks are available now. The Tecra R840/R850 and the Portege R830 all come with a three-year warranty standard.
