Samsung this week rolled out two new internal drives destined for multivendor desktop PCs: a Blu-ray disc combo unit touted as “the world’s fastest 12X Blu-ray drive,” plus a 3.5-inch, 320GB internal drive which adds to the growing Spinpoint F4 family of hard disk drives (HDDs).
Samsung foresees a continuing strong upward growth curve for Blu-ray, to be spurred by high definition (HD) video recording and playback applications, said John Suh, director of Samsung’s Optical Disc Drive Sales Team, during a product launch event in New York City.
Samsung’s new Blu-ray Disc (BD) combo drive, the SH-B123, can read Blu-ray disks at up to 12X, DVDs at up to 16X, and CDs at up to 48X, according to Suh.
Samsung’s new Spinpoint F4 320GB HDD, on the other hand, is aimed at delivering higher performance and better reliability in the continuing “sweet spot” of 320GB internal HDDs for desktop PCs.
In Samsung’s view, the market for 3.5-inch internal HDDs is set to bounce back in 2010, due to “steady desktop demand” along with strong market growth, said Jungho Joo, Samsung’s HDD sales manager.
The drive comes with bundled software for producing HD video recordings, and also for upscaling DVD resolution to full 1080p HD resolution.
Samsung uses a series of proprietary technologies in the drive to enhance precision and performance, including Spherical Aberration Compensation Technology (SACT), for improved quality of the read function in the optical drive.
“It is eco-friendly, too,” according to Suh. The small casing of the drive is aimed at lessening internal heat and CO2 emissions. The BD combo drive is also designed for low acoustic noise, and for power consumption reductions of 25 percent over competing models.
“Mainstream capacity [for 3.5-inch internal drives] is still 320GB and 500GB,” he said, referring to figures from TrendFocus and SEC Marketing.
Demand is also increasing for internal HDDs in capacities of 1TB and up, however, and this trend will continue into 2011, he noted.
Although Samsung generally sells larger capacity drives, the new F4 internal drive is designed to offer higher reliability and better desktop PC performance in the 320GB category.
Containing a single read/write head — in contrast to Samsung’s traditional dual head –with 70 percent fewer moving parts, the new drive is billed as much more crashproof and 10 percent faster than Samsung’s earlier 350GB internal HDD.
The 350GB internal HDD joins a Spinpoint F4 family which already includes two 2.5-inch external HDDs for notebook PCs and other consumer electronics (CE) gadgets.
