CES 2018 – Samsung today announced the first curved monitor with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, the CJ791. Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C is a lightning-fast connector. It’s appearing more and more on high-end notebook computers. This monitor should be a boon for buyers of notebooks like the MacBook Pro, which have only Thunderbolt 3 ports. You’d ordinarily need an adapter to hook up a traditional HDMI monitor with a notebook like that. In addition to transferring a video signal, the Thunderbolt 3 cable can supply up to 85 watts of power to the notebook. Thus, the Thunderbolt 3 cable can replace the notebook’s power adapter if the power needs are less than that.
Samsung CJ791 Specifications & Features
The CJ791 isn’t the first Thunderbolt 3 monitor; rather, it’s the first curved monitor to use the technology. The display has a massive 34-inch diagonal. It has an extra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio and a 3440×1440 pixel (QHD) resolution. That’s not quite as high as 4K (3840×2160), but it is 2.5 times higher than full HD/1080p (1920×1080). The display panel has wide viewing angles too. Samsung says it covers 125 percent of the sRGB color spectrum. It should be ideal for gaming thanks to its 4 millisecond response time.
The CJ791’s display stand is height- and tilt- adjustable. The display bezel is extra thin for a seamless look. There’s no word on whether it supports VESA mounts. We suspect Samsung will have a hard time selling many of these if it isn’t VESA compatible, however. It would be a shame to have a monitor like this and not be able to mount it on a wall or arm.
The curvature of this monitor is 1500R, which should just be enough to wrap around the edges of your vision. Our experience with curved monitors is that they provide a more involved viewing experience, especially for gaming. It’s mostly a visual feature, and not necessarily something that drives productivity.
Pricing & Availability
Samsung hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the CJ791, but we’re expecting it to be sometime in the first half of 2018. Stay tuned.
