There are plenty of sites out there that let you publish and share videos online, but precious few of those sites help earn money off your cinematic efforts. Which video sharing sites do the best job of helping you monetize your content? We break it down in this roundup.

During my last video sharing site roundup I took a look at online video sharing services aimed squarely at consumers. Share your family videos, cat pictures, and teary-eyed pleas for mercy on poor defenseless celebrities (I know, I’m years late making this joke). Today, we’re looking at ways that you can actually try and earn some bread off of your artistic endeavors. These include:

These sites all introduce advertisements into/around your video and get you involved in other video networks (excepting Brightcove). If your video or series takes off, maybe you can earn back some of the money you spent producing it, or even cut a profit. All of these are free to use, and with the exception of YouTube’s program they’re easy to join.

I had hoped to only have to discuss this on one or two of these services, but unfortunately they’re making me discuss it across the board. YouTube has one feature none of the others do and it’s a big one: high definition content. Brightcove, Blip.tv, and Revver are all stuck in the standard definition age, and unfortunately that’s just not going to cut it in the long term. HD-capable video cameras are already proliferating in the marketplace at very reasonable prices, and my own HD camera hit the scene circa 2005 (and still rocks it mightily).
