ExtremeTech has obtained information about the PCI Express 3.0 standard, which will launch around 2010.
Details of the new standard were outlined at a PCI Express Special Interest Group (SIG) press conference on June 11. PCI Express 3.0 will double the bandwidth provided by the PCI Express 2.0 standard today. It will be backwards compatible with PCI Express 2.0 and therefore not require a new connector.
The details are still subject to change, as the specifications are not expected to be completed until the end of 2009; testing should start in the second half of 2010.
