While Intel’s Atom may be the current low-power darling of the technology world, VIA is back, and with a vengeance. Early reports show their new Nano CPUs to be worthy competitors to the Atom CPU, and NVIDIA must agree, as they plan on launching a Via-based version of the Ion platform sometime this year.
This is good news for VIA; their release of the Nano predecessor was almost universally panned for being unusably slow. The new Nano seems to be garnering the opposite sentiment from reviewers, giving NVIDIA another option should their current legal troubles with Intel prove unnavigable. Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA’s president, said that this partnership with VIA has been in the making since early last year. The first Ion-based product (with the Intel Atom) to be released will be a nettop from a major manufacturer this coming June.
