Given the rumors circulating that NVIDIA’s Ion platform, which marries Intel’s now-ubiquitous Atom processor with NVIDIA’s own chipset and GeForce 9400M graphics, is comparatively a bit of a power hog, it’s no surprise to see desktop variants rising up. Interestingly, it looks like the first consumer product using the NVIDIA Ion will be a small form factor desktop, likely geared towards media usage and HTPCs.
While the word on who’s making the desktop has yet to be released, chances are good that it’s going to feature slightly non-traditional designs. Given the sheer lack of space that the Ion designs take up, manufacturers have the potential to really make something special. I think that this product might be just what we need to boost sales of nettops, which have never really taken off like netbooks.
