News Bits: OLPC Available, Apple Ultraportable in January, Record Notebook Sales

OLPC now available in U.S. 

The OLPC is now available in the U.S. via the "Give One Get One" purchase program, which allows a customer in the U.S. to buy two laptops; one laptop will go to a child and one to the buyer. The price of two laptops is $399. The program will last from November 12 through the 26.

Apple ultraportable rumored for Macworld Expo

According to AppleInsider, there could be an ultraportable Apple laptop introduced at the Macworld Expo in January. It will probably have a 13-inch screen and no internal optical drive. With NAND flash storage instead of a traditional hard disk, it will be about 50 percent lighter than the current MacBook Pro, and also slimmer. Combined with an LED-backlit display, the machine will be considerably more power efficient. This is all still a rumor, but at least this one has an expliration date.

Compal sees record notebook shipments in October

Compal Electronics saw all-time record notebook PC shipments in October, totaling 2.35 million units. Notebook shipments for the first 10 months of this year for the company totaled 18.47 million units. Revenues were  up 10% sequentially and 42.1% on-year.

Second-tier notebook manufacturers post mixed results

Second-tier Taiwanese notebook manufacturers posted mixed financial results for the month of  October. Clevo saw record high revenues while Twinhead and Mitac were down. Clevo saw revenues up 6.1% sequentially and up 57.7% on-year. Mitac saw revenues down 41.8% on-year and Twinhead saw a similar decline of 44.8% on-year.
