Intel to launch low-cost mobile PC platform

Intel will launch its "Diamondville" processor to computer manufacturers in Q3 which will be used with the "Shelton" low-cost mobile PC platform. The new platform should make for a rush of low-cost Eee PC competitors . Diamondville is a single-core processor and is designed to work with a fanless cooling system. It will have a 1.6GHz clockspeed and a 533MHz front side bus. Power consumption of the CPU itself is 3.5W while power consumption of the entire platform should be 8W.

Lenovo to launch X61 with Penryn next month

Lenovo is planning to launch its X61 series ultraportable notebook with the Intel Penryn 45nm processor next month. The X61 will be available with the T8100 (2.1GHz) and T8300 (2.4GHz) model processors. The X61 is offered with Windows XP and Vista. It is not known at this time whether the tablet X61 will be released with the Penryn processor.

Engadget leaks picture of Dell ultraportable notebook

Engadget got hold of an image of a what looks to be a 12.1" screen Dell ultraportable laptop.  Engadget claims that the laptop will be 0.78" thick and include a carbon-fiber chassis along with aluminum layer for extra protection.  There is no name, price or further specs associated with what looks to be a still in development machine.  The look is certainly different for Dell, and it appears to be a squarely consumer oriented machine given the fact it has a glossy finish.

Microsoft releases Vista SP1 RC to public

Microsoft has made a "refresh" of its Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (RC) available to the public. Microsoft notes on the download page that two or three updates will need to be installed before the SP can be installed. The final version of SP1 is still slated for a Q1 release this year, probably in February. XP SP3 is due a bit later in the first half of this year.

Fujitsu, Hitachi, Toshiba may create joint HDD firm

There is a rumor that Hitachi is in talks with Fujitsu and Toshiba to launch a new company dedicated to serving the hard drive market. Each company would have an equal part in the new venture. It anything is going to happen, it will most likely do so before April 1, the start of the Japanese business year.

Alienware m15x now available to the public

Last week Alienware launched the m15x to its newsletter subscriber pool, and late today they posted a link on their public website for the rest of the population to find this laptop on their site and order it.  At the moment there are just a couple of set configurations of the m15x available, but more configurations should be appearing by next week.

Quanta ups notebook shipment goal to 40M for 2008

Quanta, the world’s largest notebook maker, has upped its notebook shipment goal by 25% to 40 million this year. The company also expects its non-notebook lines to have similar growth. In 2007, Quanta had 60% annual growth in its notebook segments and had record profits.
