Acer ranks third in notebook shipments in Q2
In Q2 2006, Acer recorded a 42% increase in notebook shipments, and grabbed an 11.1% share of the worldwide notebook market. Acer’s increased shipments took Toshiba out of its third place spot.
Acer also widened its leading position gap with HP in Europe by strengthening partnerships with notebook distributors there. Acer’s shipments in Europe totaled 1.16 million units, compared to HP’s 970,000.
The overall worldwide PC market showed a 10.9% on-year increase in Q2, stimulated by impressive growth in the notebook sector. Notebook shipments were expected to slow down due to inventory pile-ups, but instead grew 26.9% on-year in 2Q. Some of the growth is attributed to increased demand for low-cost Sonoma notebooks, due to aggressive inventory clearance by Intel and notebook vendors prior to the launch of the Merom (Core 2 Duo)-based notebooks.
Dell is currently #1 for worldwide sales and HP #2 followed by Acer at #3 and Toshiba at #4 very close to Acer.
Dell confirms AMD-based notebooks for October
Dell has confirmed that it will launch AMD-based notebooks, and they could be available as early as October. They will be based on Sempron and Turion 64 X2 processors, and paired with 15.4″ displays. AMD Taiwan head K J Chou said “Consumers will be able to buy AMD-based computers from Dell by the end of the year.”
Industry sources claim some of the Dell laptops will be manufactured by Quanta. AMD-based Dell desktops are expected to appear in September.
White-box notebook share declines 14.5% worldwide
The white-box (clone) notebook share in the worldwide notebook market continued to decline in Q2 to 14.5%, down from 15.7% in Q1 of this year. The combined shipments of the clone notebook players (non-top-10 brand vendors) totaled 2.55 million units in Q2, compared to 2.83 million in Q1.
Intel’s efforts to promote the white-box notebook market in the Taiwan notebook industry, the “Mobile Alliance”, started to make gains in the Asia-Pacific market. Sales there reached 500,000 in Q2, up 4.2% from the 480,000 in the first. However, the proportion of white-box notebooks compared to the regional notebook market fell to 16.5% in Q2, down from 17% in Q1.

How to not steal a laptop
Laptop theft is unfortunately becoming more and more of a problem. Retail stores have to really keep their eyes out on potential thieves. Unfortunately the staff at this store did not notice this really dodgy looking guy with a trench coat pulling laptops from the window front. But the security cameras did. No word on whether he was identified and captured.
