2015 Samsung ATIV Book 9

Samsung showed the world it’s serious about thinner and lighter laptops today when the company revealed its new and improved ATIV Book 9 starting at $1,199 in the US and available in the first quarter of 2015. The latest version of the ATIV Book 9 line now features an all-aluminum chassis with a cutting-edge WQXGA display (that’s 2560 x 1600 pixels) and tips the scales at roughly 2 pounds.

As we mentioned in our CES 2015 Preview, the notebook industry will continue on the trend toward thinner and lighter laptops packed with the latest and greatest display screen technology in the new year. Samsung takes this impressively thin 12-inch laptop (measuring 0.46-inch thick and weighing just 2.06 pounds) and packs it with an Intel Broadwell Core M dual-core processor that promises a battery life of up to 10.5 hours.

Another Bright Idea

A key selling point to the ATIV Book 9 is the 12.2-inch WQXGA display. Not only does this notebook deliver greater than 1080p resolution in a small footprint, but it features a low-reflection coating for less glare and a greatly improved screen brightness that can be bumped up to 700 nits so you can clearly see the screen even under bright sunlight. For those readers who don’t already know, most notebook screens have a maximum brightness of somewhere between 200 and 300 nits.

The only thing missing in terms of screen features is a multi-touch interface, but that might not be a deal breaker since many notebook users are still reluctant to use a touchscreen despite all those wonderful apps available for Windows 8.1.

For those audiophiles out there, the new laptop features a Wolfson WM5102 UHQA lossless audio player and FLAC playback compatibility for “professional studio-quality sound.” Users should get both a stunning visual and audio experience … and we look forward to testing the screen and speakers in our lab.

Yet another notable feature to the ATIV Book 9 is the ergonomic keyboard with individually curved keys to fit and cradle the user’s fingers for a more comfortable typing experience. Thankfully, Samsung was kind enough to keep the standard row of function keys located above the number keys. We hope more manufacturers focus on retaining a standard keyboard layout like this rather than getting rid of keys just to make laptops as small and light as possible.

Samsung also promises that the ATIV Book 9 will deliver up to 20 percent faster internet connection speeds with the strongest wireless connection possible thanks to the addition of WiFi Amp, a proprietary Samsung solution for improving mobile connectivity.
