At the Gartner Symposium underway in Orlando, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer was asked a number of questions about the future of the company. His response to one question in particular took everyone by surprise.
Ballmer talked on a number of issues, like the possibility of a Windows 7 tablet launching by this year’s holiday shopping season, whether consumers might see non-phone devices running Windows Phone 7, etc.
The interviewer also questioned Ballmer on some of Microsoft’s current and future strategy plans. Ballmer responded, surprisingly, by saying that the next version of Windows was the company’s riskiest product bet. That’s all that was said on the matter, unfortunately.
Why is it risky? Because they’re following in the steps of others? Because OS X is growing? Because the future is growing increasingly mobile? It’s certainly leaving the door open for questions on the matter.
