Microsoft Buys Canesta: Bringing Kinect to Windows?

by Reads (2,260)

While Microsoft has become no stranger to camera-controlled interfaces over the past couple of years, the efforts of which culminated in the innovative Kinect project, they’ve remained mum on how that tech might find its way to their bread and butter: Windows and Office. With this week’s purchase of camera chipmaker Canesta, we may see the beginning.

The gesture-controlled options shown off in the tech demo are useful, though probably too slow for everyday use in common applications – it’s not quite Minority Report.  It’s obviously early days, though, and with the brains and money of Microsoft’s substantive R and D department behind them, this might just be what Microsoft needs to differentiate Windows 8 from its competitors.
