Samsung and LG stole the TV spotlight this CES by promising production-ready OLED TVs would hit the market this year. LG is making good at that promise, with a stunning new curved 55-inch model.
Despite coming in at nearly five feet diagonally, the TV weighs so little that you could toss it around all on your own – a carbon fiber skeleton brings the weight down to just over 37 pounds. OLED technology first made waves with a tiny – and expensive – Sony TV from several years ago before becoming popular in Samsung’s (et al) smartphones and tablets.
OLED HDTVs – for now – will ship in just 1080p varieties, not 4k, which would push the price tags that much further out of most people’s budgets. The televisions are much thinner than LCD models, offering superior black levels and color saturation.
LG is promising a launch of the 55EA9800 sometime in the next month in Korea, with wider availability to follow. If you want to pick one up (and who doesn’t), better be ready to lay out some serious cash; the models will start at roughly $13,500.
