Lenovo today announced its newest ThinkPad, the ThinkPad T431s, which features multiple design enhancements inspired by an extensive global research project.

What is new and noteworthy about the latest T-series ThinkPad? Some of the first things that previous ThinkPad users will notice is the noticeably thinner and lighter form factor — the thinnest of any T Series to date — as well as a new island-style key design with backlit keyboard. There is also a new 5-point TrackPad and a smaller bezel around the display giving this ThinkPad far more modern aesthetics.

Nine Countries, One Ultrabook
How many countries does it take to make a new ThinkPad? Lenovo conducted extensive research with both non-ThinkPad users and ThinkPad loyalists around the world, to gather detailed feedback on ThinkPad design. Over nine months and in nine countries, researchers spent thousands of hours shadowing users in their homes, workplaces and remote locations, observing user behavior and asking questions. This extensive research directly contributed to the new design of the T431s.

Lenovo’s researchers discovered that people prioritize simplicity and modern elements when it comes to their technology. This translated into three priorities for Lenovo when designing the new T431s:

Streamlined Interior: Lenovo updated the much-loved ThinkPad precision keyboard by improving key placement while maintaining shortcuts for a sleeker-looking keyboard. Lenovo’s engineers also designed the display with a super thin bezel and a new Graphite Black color for the chassis.

Enhanced touchpad experience: The new ThinkPad TrackPad is an evolution of the TrackPoint and TouchPad featuring a new larger, smooth, responsive, multi-touch glass surface that optimizes Windows 8 gestures, click functionality, and integrates TrackPoint behavior to deliver a customized, improved experience for all users. The iconic red TrackPoint is still there, but everthing appears more streamlined.

Thinness, Durability, Reliability: The ThinkPad T431s, the “thinnest and lightest T-series ever made” and the first device incorporating the new design elements, weighs just 3.6 pounds (1.63kg) and measures only 0.82 inches (20.6mm) thin. The carbon fiber top cover and magnesium exterior continue ThinkPad’s heritage of business-class rugged design and durability.

The rest of the changes to the new ThinkPad are what you might expect from a early 2013 release: the T431s is powered by Intel third generation Core processors with Turbo Boost and Intel HD Graphics, up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM and additional HDD and SSD storage options. The T431s has a 14-inch HD+ (1600 x 900) anti-glare display, two USB 3.0 ports and is available with Intel vPro for easy device management. Like all T-series ThinkPads, the T431s supports ThinkPad docking and provides enhanced security that commercial customers require.

Pricing and Availability
The ThinkPad T431s will be available in April starting at approximately $949. Detailed technical specs and configuration options are available in the ThinkPad T431s datasheet.
