Some internal marketing slides from AMD were purportedly leaked onto the internet today, showing the presence of a new video card. The Radeon HD 4830 is rumored to launch in late November and adds a much needed midrange card to AMD’s fierce lineup.
What with the recent release of the HD 4670 and the current trend-busting 48×0 cards, AMD has a solid lineup on either side of the spectrum. The middle, however, has a giant hole in it currently being filled with the $130 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT. To combat their rival, AMD looks to release the HD 4830 with a fair number of features for a midrange to low budget card. The new card will utilize 640 stream processors (SP) and GDDR3 memory, an interesting compromise between the 4850’s 800 SP and the 4670’s 320 SP. AMD looks to be recommending a 450W power supply for a single card and a 550W supply in otder to run two of them in CrossfireX mode.
A graph that was also leaked clearly shows that AMD is aiming straight at NVIDIA’s midrange 9800 GT.
Obviously when manufacturers release benchmarks of their own products, the results need to be taken with whole heaping moutains full of salt. While the rumored price is set to be $150, NVIDIA only charges $130 for the 9800 GT, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see AMD try and match it. With strong contenders soon to be at most price points along the line, AMD really turning the heat up on NVIDIA.
