LaCie 2big Brings External RAID to USB 3.0

LaCie, known for offering their unique take on traditional storage solutions looks to do it again with the new 2big USB 3.0.  Leveraging the speed increases inherent to the upcoming interoperability standard, the 2big uses two traditional hard drives and two different RAID modes to bring users either very safe or very fast external storage.

Starting at capacities of two terabytes (two x 1TB drives), the 2big uses an internal RAID controller – it appears as one drive to the operating system (a separate JBOD mode is available so that users can back up the drives separetely). Switch to the “fast” mode to get a RAID 0 – striping – mode than spans both drives to provide fast storage at up to 205MB/s. Move the toggle over to “safe” mode and the 2big becomes a RAID 1 – mirroring – array makes anything stored on the 2big automatically backed up onto the second internal drive.

David Barberis, Product Manager for LaCie’s Professional Desktop Solutions, said:

“We are proud to announce the first RAID storage solution to fully leverage the performance of the USB 3.0 interface.  Developed for users that require sizeable data flow, such as print professionals, recording engineers, and video producers, the 2big USB 3.0 allows them to take advantage of high capacities while delivering industry-leading transfer speeds.”

The 2big is fanless, so it stays quiet even under heavy workloads. It comes with a three-year warranty and LaCie’s optional Adcanced Care services.  Available in capacities from 2 – 4TB, the 2big starts at $349.99 at LaCie’s online stores.
