Iomega Beats Competition to the Punch with Ivy Bridge-Powered StorCenter Storage Arrays

StorCenter px12-450rIomega’s new StorCenter px12-450r shows how serious the company is in courting the storage needs of small business users. Available in diskless form all the way up to a projected 48TB model, the new StorCenter puts all the storage your small business could need into an easily accessible, virus-free format.

The new system comes in a rackmountable design, with each px12-450r offering up a full 12 drive bays of storage capacity. While the StorCenter ships in a variety of storage capacities (including diskless, for those customers who wish to roll their own, as it were), Iomega is already promising almost 50TB of planned capacity – as soon as 4TB drives become available.

As this is a piece of business-class hardware, it comes with a business-class pricetag: diskless models start at $5,499.99. You get a surprising number of advanced features for that budget, however, including some which you don’t start seeing on product offerings until you up your spending to over 2x the previous level.

Iomega is making a big deal of the software features the new StorCenter offers, including McAfee’s VirusScan Enterprise application, which runs natively on the server hardware (no need to run it from a second client). Other, more standard features, such as data deduplication and desktop virtualization, are also present. Customers will also be able to expand upon the seemingly robust software architecture by writing their own apps – with the aid of Iomega’s LifeLine SDK, the StorCenter px12-450r will be able to run custom Linux programs.

Of course, it isn’t just software that is user-extensible, but the physical hardware, too. PCIe slots will allow for interconnectivity upgrades, and even the Xeon processors are accessible. The px12-450r is also largely toolless, an improvement over its predecessor.

Besides the Ivy Bridge-based Xeons, the new StorCenter comes with a whopping 8GB of RAM.

Iomega plans for the StorCenter px12-450r to hit worldwide availability starting in the 3rd quarter of this year, with prices starting at the aforementioned $5499.99 level.
