Best Buy’s house brand Insignia recently released their own version of Sony’s Dash, the Infocast Internet Media Display. The Internet Media Display is basically a nettop in the truest sense of the word. Packed with widgets and simple touch apps, the IMD pulls information, media and statistics from the Internet and puts it into an easy-to-use display meant to sit on the coffee or bedside table.
The Infocast IMD has an 8-inch, 800×600 resolution touchscreen display. There’s 2GB of onboard flash memory, as well as two USB2.0 ports and a multi-in-one memory card reader. The device will actually play media stored on the removable storage as well as the preset Internet streams. Connections are made entirely wirelessly, via the unit’s built-in Wi-Fi. There’s also a microphone and stereo speakers; users can take advantage of both in the IMD’s app store.
While neither it nor the Sony Dash have really been around long enough to see which one comes out on top in a head-to-head battle, the Infodash manages to provide a great deal of information for the $169.99 asking price. It’s available in Best Buy retail stores and online at BestBuy.com.
