HP launches three new Officejet series

HP announced today that three new printer series – the Officejet Pro 8500, Officejet Pro 8000 and the Officejet 6500- will be joining their booming small business lineup and we got a first look at the affordable, laser alternatives last week.

The inspiration behind this new launch – other than putting out a laser quality printer at an inkjet price – was HP’s go green attitude.  They have started a recycling program for old models and ink cartridges, spun off a green edition of the Officejet Pro 8500 exclusively through Staples and will be including eco friendly feature labels on the new models. Not to mention that all three printers are Energy Star qualified and reduce energy use up to 50 percent compared to a similar sized laser printer.

Besides having its own green friendly series, the Officejet Pro 8500 series comes across as the real star of the recently released group.  It truly gives laser quality prints at half the cost thanks to a switch to pigment-based ink cartridges.  During demonstrations on HP’s ColorLok paper, I couldn’t tell the difference between the laser document and the Officejet document.

The Pro 8500 base model is a 4-in-1 device – print, scan, copy, fax – featuring print speeds up to 35 pages per minute (ppm) in black and 34 ppm in color, duplexing, a 35 page automatic document feeder, a LCD control panel and network capability.  Wireless networking, a 3.45 inch LCD, a 50 page automatic document feeder and a second 250 sheet paper tray are available on upgraded versions.

The Pro 8000 series is similar to the 8500 with pigment-based ink for great laser quality prints.  It features print speeds up to 35 ppm, duplexing and wired network capability.  Wireless is available on the higher end model.

The Officejet 6500 series is HP’s first sub $200 of its kind.  The 4-in-1 base model features print speeds up to 32 ppm in black and 31 ppm in color, an automatic document feeder and wired network capability.  The higher end model adds Wi-Fi, duplexing and additional memory.

HP says the new printers will be available later this month.  The 6500 series starts at $149, the Pro 8000 series starts at $149 and the Pro 8500 series starts at $299.
