Hitachi may not be a household name in the United States when it comes to hard drive technology, but they still duel it out with the other big boys. This time, they’ve leapfrogged the competition and delivered some of the densest storage technologies yet, packing on a whopping terabyte of data into one spinning platter.
Why is this important? One terabyte on a hard drive doesn’t seem like much these days. Hard drive manufacturers can stack these platters, however, similar to how old jukeboxes might stack records or CDs. Pack five of these platters into one HDD – a feat that is not unheard of – and you’d have 5TB of storage capacity in a single drive. Considering that just today Seagate showed off the first 4TB hard drive, and you can see why this becomes such an achievement.
Hitachi is busy putting the 1TB/platter drives to work in both of their consumer-oriented drive lines. The Deskstars come in the form of the the Deskstar 7K1000.D, and the 5K1000.B, which implements some power-saving measures (known as CoolSpin technology) to cut idle power draw by up to 23%. That adds on top of the fact that thanks to the decreased platter numbers, the new 7K1000 drives pull 15% less power over previous models. These drives also ship with a 6Gbps SATAIII interface and 32MB cache buffers.
The second half of the desktop hard drive lineup, Hitachi’s CinemaStar series, also gets to put the drive to use. These drives are engineered to hold up in constant use within consumer electronics devices such as DVRs or security systems. The CinemaStar 7K1000.D brings in the same specifications as its Deskstar variant, while the CinemaStar 5K1000.B employs slower spin speeds to keep heat and noise to a minimum.
If you look around, you can find the Deskstar 7K1000.D and 5K1000.B at select Hitachi distributors. The CinemaStar isn’t quite ready, however, and is expected to see widespread availability later this fall.
