Good Housekeeping Magazine isn’t exactly a tech magazine or the type of magazine we’d go to for in depth reviews, but it’s interesting to note what the domestic experts of the world have nominated as the best laptops:

  • Gateway 200XL. This powerful PC has the largest hard drive of any model tested and comes with built-in wireless networking. $2,200; 800-846-2000
  • Fujitsu LifeBook P5000. A pint-size portable, the P5000 weighs less than four pounds (with battery) and has a 10.6-inch screen. $1,699; 877-372-3473
  • Apple Powerbook G4. This sleek-looking laptop offers the familiar feel of a Mac, a crystal-clear screen and long battery life. The Powerbook ran for more than five hours on a single battery charge, longer than any model the Institute tested. $1,599; 800-692-7753
  • Toshiba Satellite A15-S127. Despite its relatively low price tag ($999), this laptop has many upscale features, such as a combination DVD/CD-RW drive, so you can watch movies on the road. 800-867-4422
