Gateway Launches New NV Series Notebooks

Gateway took the wraps off of its new NV Series line of notebook PCs today with the latest AMD “APU” processors and discrete graphics. Is it finally possible to buy a good desktop replacement notebook for less than the cost of an iPad 2?

The flagship model of the new NV line is the Gateway NV51B05u, which features an AMD E-350 processor and ATI Radeon HD 6310 graphics that work together to deliver a significantly better multimedia performance than what you’ll typically find on a budget-priced 15-inch notebook.

Technically, the E-350 is one of AMD’s new “accelerated processing unit” (APU) which combines a dual-core CPU with a 1.6GHz clock speed and a Radeon graphics processing unit (GPU) on a single processor die. This allows computer manufacturers like Gateway to squeeze more computational power into a smaller area; this means you’ll get a relatively thin and lightweight 15-inch laptop with a lot more video and graphics horsepower than a similarly priced notebook from 2010.

You won’t have to worry if this system can handle streaming Netflix or watching smooth 1080p HD video. The E-350 and Radeon HD 6310 can do all that and still let you play many popular PC games. Not only that, but the power-friendly E-350 chip should help the new NV series deliver good battery life as well.

The Gateway NV51B05u is available now at technology retailers at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $469.99.

In terms of the look and feel of these notebooks, the new NV line delivers a full-sized keyboard, a 15.6-inch HD widescreen Ultrabright LED-backlit display with 1366 x 768 resolution, three USB ports, an HDMI port and a variety of configurations with ample memory and a large hard drive.

In addition to the new NV51B05u, Gateway will offer at least three other NV-series laptops with the AMD APU Vision technology. The Gateway NV51B02u also has the new AMD E-Series Processor E-350 and has an MSRP of $449.99. The NV51B08u has an AMD C-50 APU with a lower MSRP of $399.99.
