Walmart’s Incredible $791 Gaming Laptop
Walmart’s Overpowered-brand gaming laptops are making waves with their low prices. Their Overpowered 15+ 15.6-inch gaming laptop delivers an incredible amount of value for the money, complete with a metal chassis and a mechanical LED-backlit keyboard. It’s just $791, including a $7.99 in-store pickup discount. (Or, pay $799 with free shipping).
It has the following specifications:
- 15.6-inch 1080p display with a 144Hz refresh rate
- Windows 10 Home 64-bit operating system
- Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor (2.2GHz)

The notebook even includes a $150 game bundle. Get it at Walmart
There’s also the Overpowered Gaming Laptop 17+ with similar specifications, but 32GB of memory and a 2TB hard drive for just $999.
The Hunt for 32GB DDR4 SoDIMMs
Samsung announced its claimed industry-first 32GB SoDIMM modules for notebook computers back in May 2018.
They’re apparently still hard to get at the end of 2018, as one of our forum members found. The highest-capacity SoDIMMs you can readily find in-stock are 16GB modules.
Naturally, you can expect to pay quite a bit for the latest and greatest. The 32GB Samsung SoDIMMs were going for about $800 as of this writing.
The Mechanical Keyboard Thread
Mechanical keyboards are all the rage, and that’s why there’s now an official thread in the forum about it. The click-clacks aren’t for everyone, but if you’re willing to spend a little extra, they deliver a more engaging tactile experience than your standard include-with-the-PC keyboard.
I’ve had my share of mechanical keyboards and enjoyed them. In the end I left them behind for an Ultra Classic Buckling Spring model from Unicomp. It’s louder than heck, but it’s a great typing experience.
Troubleshooting Bad GPU Performance
It’s frustrating when your games aren’t running right. It’s even more frustrating when your new gaming laptop is the cause. One of our forum members experienced roughly half the performance from an Asus GL702ZC gaming laptop. Strangely, the problems didn’t surface while playing older games.
The issue ended up being the fans not behaving properly for unknown reasons; they wouldn’t ramp up while the graphics card was under load, causing it to overheat rather rapidly. That may have been due to faulty temperature sensors. The solution? Send it in for warranty repair.
