Elgato has been making Mac-oriented TV tuners for a while, now, and the EyeTV One is the latest in their line. Their most recent effort, the EyeTV Hybrid, marries both NTSC and ATSC tuners in one slim device. The EyeTV One comes in thirty dollars cheaper, at $120, but sacrifices some functionality to make it in.
The new EyeTV One is only capable of recording from OTA ATSC sources – no NTSC basic cable channels, and no ClearQAM from your cable provider. That’s a lot of functionality to give up for only saving thirty bucks, but if you’re looking for a way to supplement something like satellite service with an OTA tuner, this might be the way to go.
The EyeTV One comes with Elgato’s DVR software for the Mac, but not Windows. That’s not exactly surprising, considering the stellar Media Center software built into the OS by Microsoft. At least the drivers are included. It does also come with free TV Guide data or one year (optional renewals ‘only’ $19.95) but chances are you can find the info for free somewhere.
