CES2012: Lenovo IdeaCentre K430 Hits Gaming Head On

Dell has Alienware, HP has the new Phoenix…sort of…and boutique manufacturers like Origin PC, Falcon Northwest and AVA Direct push their own gaming platforms. But…Lenovo? Yeah, Lenovo. The new IdeaCentre K430 is targeted straight at the enthusiast gamer, offering dual AMD or NVIDIA GPUs and up to 32GB of RAM.

At first glance, it’s clear that Lenovo means business with the IdeaCentre K430, and for once, we don’t mean business business. No, this thing has gamer written all over it, and Lenovo is trying to push the new desktop as a replacement for “intensive multimedia tasks or extreme gaming.”

We enjoy gaming, to be sure, but ‘extreme gaming’…what does that involve, anyway? Regardless, the K430 has the hardware to back up its claims. Lenovo is pushing Intel’s Core i7 CPUs and both AMD or NVIDIA graphics for the new machine – take your pick. Either platform is available in a dual-card configuration, with CrossFireX for AMD and SLI for NVIDIA.

Your storage gets a speed boost too, with up to 2 x 2TB hard drives linked in a RAID 0 configuration, or a 128GB SSD. Lenovo is also pulling an HP and adding in the ability to dock a portable hard drive (of up to 500GB) with a “Universal Storage Module” interface dock. The speed continues with at least one USB 3.0 port, offering consumers lucky enough to snag a USB 3.0 flash drive access to their files at SSD-like throughput.
