The Canon imageCLASS MF5880dn looks much like the imageCLASS MF8350Cdn and the imageCLASS MF8050Cn models we reviewed previously; same boxy style done in a white/gray color (it’s hard to describe) with black feature panels and accents. The main differences, design wise, between the MF5880dn and MF8000 models are that the imageCLASS MF5880dn has a full control panel that runs the width of the front side and it has slightly smaller dimensions at approximately 15 x 19 x 17 inches.

Starting from the top, the imageCLASS MF5880dn offers a 50-sheet automatic document feeder for copying, scanning or faxing large documents without the need for the user to be present.

Directly beneath the imageCLASS MF5880dn ADF, users will find the 24-bit color flatbed scanner which enables businesses to scan in color despite the fact that the MF5880dn is a monochrome device. The maximum scan size using the flatbed is 8.5 x 11 inches but users can actually scan documents up to 8.5 x 14 inches using the ADF. Canon offers several Scan to options including: Scan to USB, Scan to e-mail and Scan to SMB.

As mentioned previously, the control panel on the MF5880dn runs the length of the front side of the unit and features a 2-line display, three quick keys for the main devices, a numerical key pad, fax speed dials as well as several additional options. The front side USB port is located directly beneath the control panel, to the left of the 150-sheet output bin.

The imageCLASS MF5880dn offers a 50-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet standard paper cassette. Customers can also purchase an optional 500 sheet cassette taking the total paper capacity up to 800 sheets. The maximum monthly duty cycle for the MF5880dn is 15,000 pages.

Pull open the front panel to access the single black toner cartridge provided in the original packaging. Purchase a replacement Canon 119 Black Toner Cartridge through the Canon website for $87.

All connections are found on the back of the printer. Canon offers 10/100 Base-T Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity with the MF5880dn.
