On the eve of what is undoubtedly going to be one of the most watched press events in recent history, Business Insider’s Silicon Alley Insider has a really interesting chart covering Apple’s recent money makers. What nets them the most? If you said their computers, you’d be wrong.
Thanks to some recent accounting changes that let Apple report profits directly after sale rather than over a two-year period like previous years, the iPhone has far and away become Apple’s largest source of revenue. For the first time, it’s outshone both the computers (laptops and desktops) and all of the iPods by more than a billion dollars.
What will the tablet be classified as? iPhone, Mac, something else entirely? This time next year, this chart may have a seventh category coming in somewhere between Software and the iPod. It just goes to show that Apple has really transcended the computer label and become a technology company, just like some of its competitors.
