January 6th is finally here, and with it brings the (first day of CES as well as the) arrival of the Mac App Store. The new app store is at the heart of Apple’s efforts to leverage the technologies, design and control developed for their mobile iOS and bring them to the desktop space.
Some of the best features of the iOS app marketplace, such as quality control, infinite re-downloads, application updating and software discovery are part of the new Mac App Store. Additionally, licensing will be made much simpler, letting users install their app store purchases on up to five computers that are tied together by a single Apple account.
Critics of the new platform fear that the Mac App Store is just one more step along the way toward Apple’s transition from fully-featured computers to a more appliance-centric approach offered on the iPhone. Whether such a move would make sense, only Apple can say – but it’s clear that the runaway success of the iPhone and iPad are pushing them to act sooner rather than later.
