Today, Amped Wireless announced a new product designed to help flesh out your wireless network. The REC10 High Power 600mW Compact Range Extender broadcasts your network signal at up to twelve times the strength of traditional routers, says Amped. Unlike many traditional network repeaters, the REC10 is extremely compact, plugging directly into an outlet like Apple’s Airport Express.
The company says that its new network repeater can blanket your whole home with Wi-Fi – and then some. A whole lotta some. The REC10 can reportedly cover up to 6500 square feet with your cleverly named wireless network; Amped claims that most average routers cover somewhere along the lines of just 1500 square feet or so.
Extra coverage like that can make a big difference when it comes to how useful your network really is – it means your tablets and notebooks can get connected from across the lawn, down in the basement, or around a particularly annoying building structure (in my case, an elevator shaft).
Measuring four inches long by just under three inches wide, the REC10 won’t take up too much space. It can serve double duty as an Ethernet bridge, too, thanks to the included port on its underside; users can also set the device to restrict access to certain users or times of day, which will work even if your normal router doesn’t offer that functionality.
Available now, you can order a unit straight from Amped Wireless’s web site for $79.99. It’ll be offered in retail stores across the country later this month.
