AMD, IBM, others look to beat Intel by skipping ahead to 28nm chips

IBM and a consortium of partners have announced a agreement to jointly develop 28nm chip technologies.  The new partnership calls for early risk production in the second half of 2010 so it’s going to be some time before we see any retails products based on this technology.

The real question, at least for us, is whether this can let some of these companies pull one up on Intel.  The CPU giant is scheduled to release their first 32nm-based cihps sometime late this year, and potentially move to a 22nm process as soon as 2012.
