Dell’s M11x packs a powerful punch in a small machine. The Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 over-clockable processor at 1.3GHz is included in the $599 price tag, but you may also choose the Intel Core i5-520UM at 1.06GHz or the Core i7-640UM at 1.2GHz for a little extra. The systems all come built with the 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT-335M discrete graphics card.

The graphics card included with every model is switchable with the integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD, also included. When we tested the system with Mass Effect 2 with the NVIDIA graphics card, we said it performed “nearly perfect.”

Although the 11.6-inch glossy LED-backlit screen (1366 x 768) is smaller in size since the notebook was built for gaming on the go, we thought the display had a “good color reproduction” and that there is as much screen space as many larger notebooks.

As far as looks go, most know the Alienware brand by its neat-looking design and back-lit keyboard and the use of the famous alien head logo. The backlight keyboard, alien head and vent colors can all be customized at no extra cost to display your favorite color. Choose from blue, red, green, yellow, aqua or purple.

The 8-cell battery in the Core i7 model was tested in our labs and lasted almost two hours while playing Mass Effect 2 on Steam (Nvidia discrete graphics, 70 percent brightness, Wi-Fi on). If you aren’t into gaming, then you’ll be pleased to know this ultraportable notebook delivers almost 6 hours of battery life.

We also had some good things to say about the M11x’s audio quality; we said it is definitely above average for an ultraportable notebook.

Also included in the $599 price:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 2GB DDR3 RAM at 800MHz
  • 160GB SATA II hard drive at 5400RPM
  • 8-Cell Prismatic battery (64 whr)
  • HD 5.1 surround sound audio
