Gateway announced Thursday it will be closing all of its Gateway Country retail stores in the United States. 2,500 people will be laid off by Gateway because of this, that's 40% of its staff from this ever shrinking company.
Sony has announced plans to add retail outlets in 10 markets over the next several months. The plan is similar to the stores Apple has rolled out. Sony can only hope they're as successful as Apple, rather than following the footsteps of the Gateway Country Stores.
In Europe Dell has already replaced its budget level notebook, the Inspiron 1100, with the new Inspiron 1150. The same notebook should become available in the U.S. this week and the 1100 will be phased out. Given the fact the 11XX series is a budget series, there's little that has changed and certainly nothing exciting added.
