HP Designjet T120 Review: First Look

by Reads (3,377)

When HP contacted us to see if we were interested in reviewing the Designjet T120, I was pretty excited because while I had seen some of HP’s large format printers in action, I had never reviewed one in house.

The Designjet T120 is the entry level into HP’s large format line at 24-inches and offering a price tag (barely) under $1000. Customers can print from Letter to Ledger using the rear tray or switch over to the 24-inch wide front-loading media roll.

Today, we’ll be sharing our hands-on first look with information on the build, design, specifications, price and availability as well as plenty of photos from our test lab. And make sure you come back soon for the full review where we share the results of all our testing!

Build and Design

The Designjet T120 resembles the smaller Photosmart inkjets with the sleek black exterior, 4.3-inch color touch screen and simple layout. And as the most compact of the series, customers can actually set the T120 up on a desktop or purchase the optional stand which includes an output landing for printers using media roll.

Without the stand, the approximate dimensions are 39 x 21 x 11 inches but if you plan on printing from a desk, you’ll need to allow for at least another foot of space in front of the printer for print output. If you opt for the stand (like the review unit we received), you’ll need more space (overall dimensions with the printer attached are around 39 x 36 x 37 inches) but it’s on wheels so it’s easy to move around the office.

If set up over a network (the Designjet T120 offers wireless, wired and USB connectivity), the Designjet T120 offers web connectivity with Designjet ePrint & Share, similar to the HP ePrint you find on the Photosmart and Officejet all-in-one inkjets. It works with both Apple and Android operating systems.

The Designjet T120 uses four 711 series ink cartridges (CMYK) and customers can easily change cartridges on the Designjet T120 thanks to the front loading access found on the left side of the device.

The Designjet T120 can truly handle a variety of media thanks to the dual paper inputs, the B+/A3 tray and 24-inch wide front-loading roll. The input tray can handle media ranging from 8.3 to 24 inches wide while the spindle can handle media rolls ranging from 11 to 24 inches wide. The maximum roll output is 150 ft. with a maximum media thickness up to 11.8 mil.
