Canon Pixma Pro-1 Review: First Look

by Reads (4,177)

Canon first introduced the Pixma Pro-1 Professional Inkjet Printer at last fall’s PhotoPlus Expo, but saw a delayed release due to weather related hits to production overseas. Now that the first professional photo printer since the Pixma Pro9000 Mark II and Pixma Pro9500 Mark II is readily available, we’ll be sharing our first look and review with our readers!

Today, we’ll go through the build, design, specs, pricing, availability and more with plenty of photos from our lab. And don’t forget to check back for the full review where we will share the results from our full battery of tests!

Build and Design

At first glance, the Canon PIXMA Pro-1 Professional Inkjet Printer looks very similar to the Mark II printers released a few years ago; it shares the same two tone color concept of black and charcoal gray as well as the simple control panel made up of only power, feed and sheet load buttons and a front side USB port.

And like its predecessors, the Pixma Pro-1 will take up some considerable desk space with the approximate dimensions of 18 x 27 x 10 inches in nonuse; you’ll add on several inches with the rear tray and front output tray extended.

But this is where the similarities end. Canon has addressed past concerns of small ink cartridges that were difficult to reach with a front loading ink system and 36 ML ink tanks, approximately 2.5 times than traditional ink cartridges.

The new ink system combines the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) patented print head with a tubular ink delivery pulling from the motionless ink tanks located on the left and right sides of the machine.

And Canon has expanded the color gamut to 12 Lucia pigment inks: Matte Black, Photo Black, Dark Gray, Gray, Light Gray, Photo Cyan, Cyan, Photo Magenta, Magenta, Yellow, Red and the Chroma Optimizer.

Print speeds are also expected to increase with Canon claiming a print speed of 4 minutes and 20 seconds for a 13 x 19-inch image and an 11 x 14-inch image in just under three minutes.

They are also now offering wired network connectivity along with Hi-Speed USB 2.0, allowing the printer to be shared amongst a workgroup.
