BUILD AND DESIGN
The Brother MFC-6890cdw is the top of the line when it comes to Brother’s all-in-one inkjet printers thanks to a bevy of features. It is also the largest all-in-one inkjet printer I’ve ever reviewed with approximate dimensions of 21 x 19 x 13 inches when not in use. Add in the extended output trays and the dimensions end up being 23 x 24 x 13 inches.
The MFC-6890cdw has a professional look with its matte black exterior and gray accents around the control panel. There is a small Brother logo on the top left corner and a small model number above the touch screen. Despite being the largest inkjet I’ve seen, it has a compact look going for it considering it handles 350 sheets of paper standard and prints on documents as large as 11 x 17 inches.
For instance, many inkjets add more than a few inches when folding out the automatic document feeder (ADF) but the 50-sheet ADF on the MFC-6890cdw maybe adds a few centimeters on top. There is a small flip out hook on the side for catching documents but it’s probably only necessary for larger documents since the MFC-6890cdw is compatible with paper media up to 11 x 17 inches.
The 48-bit flatbed scanner on the MFC-6890cdw is also the largest scanner I’ve seen on an AIO inkjet printer with a maximum document size of 11.7 x 17 inches. The MFC-6890cdw scans documents and photos to e-mail, files, memory cards, USB flash drives, or scan software with an optical scan resolution up to 1200 x 2400 dpi and an interpolated scan resolution up to 19,200 x 19,200 dpi.
The control panel extends the width of the MFC-6890cdw with the 4.2 inch touch screen display at the center. To the left of the touch screen, users will find fax and copy functions such as speed dial keys and a numerical key pad. To the right, there are four main menu keys – fax, scan, copy, photo capture – as well as the start, stop and power options.
Directly below the control panel is the built-in card reader with a PictBridge slot. The MFC-6890cdw is compatible with a variety of media: SD cards, xD cards, Memory Stick, PictBridge enabled digital cameras, and USB flash drives.
To the right of the control panel, you’ll find Brother’s front side ink cartridge compartment for easy loading of any or all four individual ink cartridges (CMYK). The MFC-6890cdw came with a set of Brother Innobella LC65HY high yield cartridges. However, Brother does offer the Innobella LC61 standard yield cartridges for the MFC-6890cdw.
Beneath the control panel, users will find the dual paper trays. The MFC-6890cdw features a top tray with a capacity of 100 sheets for media 3.5 x 5 inches to 11 x 17 inches. The bottom tray offers a capacity up to 250 sheets for media 8.5 x 11 inches to 11 x 17 inches.
Half the connection ports are located on the left side of the printer. The MFC-6890cdw comes with an attached power cord (never worry about losing it!) as well as two phone jacks. For access to the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 or Ethernet ports, users will need to lift the MFC-6890cdw open at the middle by grabbing the handle found on the left or right side of the machine.
Access to the paper path can be found on the back of the MFC-6890cdw.
