Brother HL-5470dw Review: First Look

by Reads (3,097)

Brother introduced nine monochrome laser printers geared towards small office environments earlier this summer. We reviewed the Brother HL-6180dw and now it’s time to check out the HL-5470dw, the middle option in the single function HL-5400 series.

All three configurations in the HL-5400 series offer print speeds up to 40 ppm, a print resolution up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, automatic duplexing, 250-sheet tray with a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, a monthly duty cycle up to 50,000 pages and a 400 MHz processor.

The HL-5470dw offers a standard memory increase – 128 MB over 64 MB on the base HL-5450dn model – as well as standard wireless connectivity and a one line backlit LCD.

Build and design

If you read our Brother HL-6180dw review, you’ll notice that the HL-5470dw and the HL-6180dw share nearly identical designs with the latter receiving a larger (500-sheet) paper tray, adding an inch to its height. The HL-5470dw’s approximate dimensions in non-use are 14 x 15 x 10 inches but you need to consider the front side multipurpose tray when placing the printer in your office.

The box itself is fairly durable and offers little frills with only a simple control panel consisting of a 1-line backlit LCD, seven quick keys and two LED lights for standalone use. You won’t find a front side USB port but I was prepared for that since neither of the higher end models ? the HL-5470dwt or HL-6180dw ? came with this feature.

To access the two-piece consumable set – a 3,000 page yield standard capacity toner cartridge and a 30,000 page yield drum unit – you only need to press the small button located at the end of the 150-sheet output tray. Brother offers customers two replacement cartridge options: the standard capacity mentioned above and an 8,000 page yield high capacity cartridge.

The HL-5470dw has a decent sized 250-sheet paper drawer and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, but customers with decent print volumes might consider the optional 500-sheet drawer.

As I mentioned earlier, the HL-5470dw features built-in wireless as well as wired network or Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity. However, if you set up the HL-5470dw over a network connection, customers can access a variety of mobile applications including Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Brother’s iPrint&Scan, Cortado Workplace or Wi-Fi Direct.
