Matrox DualHead2Go Digital SE Review

Using multiple displays can be a great way to increase productivity. From gaming to day trading the applications of multiple displays are almost endless. However, many laptops and computers still don't have the ability to run multiple displays at once. That's where the Matrox DualHead2Go Digital SE multiple display adapter comes in. The device allows users to add two additional monitors to their desktop or laptop along with a slew of programmable features.

The Matrox DualHead2Go Digital SE is able to add two monitors creating a stretched desktop with a maximum resolution of 3840 x 1200 (2x1920x1200) at a 60Hz refresh rate. Additionally, if you are connecting the device to a laptop you can also have the laptop's display serve as a separate screen as well, for a total of 3 displays.

Unfortunately the Digital SE requires a Display Port to connect, which some graphics cards do not support, but it should be noted that Matrox offers additional models with more display options. Additionally, the device uses a USB (for power) and offers two DVI outputs to connect the desired displays. For Mac users Matrox also offers a Digital ME version, which connects with a thunderbolt or Mini Display Port and offers additional software compatible with OS X. 

Setting up the device isn't incredibly difficult, but accessing the more nuanced features can be a bit tricky.  After the device is connected the Matrox Power Desk software does include a quick install feature perfect for basic users, as it automatically optimizes the resolution depending on the displays that are connected.

Accessing the more complex features however, is a bit more difficult. Advanced users will be able to segment the displays (both horizontally and vertically), add customizable key bindings, and dictate how specific programs and functions interact with the multiple displays. While the slew of features is welcomed, the software fails to adequately explain how they work, which can make the wide breath of options a bit overwhelming for some users.

After getting past the somewhat ambiguous setup the Digital SE works like a charm. Users can set specific programs to span across both screens while having others designated to a specific display, and with the customizable key bindings programs can easily be moved from one display to the next with a simple click of a button. Best of all the Digital SE feels extremely light and smooth, and runs with virtually no tax the PC. At no point was there any noticeable lag or decline in the computers performance while using the adapter. Even when juggling multiple programs between the two displays. 

Conclusion

The Matrox DualHead2Go Digital SE is a solid display adapter that provides multiple display functionality without hindering performance. The additional features serve as a nice bonus, though some of them can be a bit complicated to set up. If you find yourself in a need of a multiple display adapter, then the Digital SE will serve you well. However, users who already have dual-display functionality and are simply looking for additional features, may find the device wanting.
