NVIDIA collaborating with Epic Games demonstrated the first use of the Unreal 3 Engine on the tablet platform. NVIDIA demonstrated this feat on the ASUS Vivo Tab RT, which took place at the ASUS press conference this morning held at IFA in Germany. During the presentation NVIDIA showed off the Epic Citadel demo, but this advancement could prove to offer far more interesting options in the future.
The Unreal 3 Engine originally developed by Epic Games (makers of Gears of War and Infinity Blade), is considered one of the premier gaming engines in the industry. It is offered on 9 platforms and has been licensed for more than 225 game titles, including critically acclaimed titles like Mass Effect 3, and Batman Arkham City.
This is undoubtedly a huge advancement for the Windows ecosystem as it is now hosting one of the top game engines, and more importantly it is the full pc implementation. The fact that the Window tablets will now be able to run the same version of Unreal Engine 3 as PC and consoles opens a great deal of options to developers, as it will make porting PC and Console titles exponentially easier. How far will this technology extend our tablet gaming catalogs? Unfortunately only time will tell.
NVIDIA notes that its work with Unreal Engine 3 is only one of the things that they have planned to support the upcoming Windows RT platform, and assures users that there will be more to come as we approach the Windows RT launch on Oct. 26.
