Sony has updated the designs and specifications of its VAIO consumer notebooks and also introduced a new T series Ultrabook, an ultra-slim traveling companion. All are available with the latest Intel Core processors (3rd gen).
The T13 is Sony's first Ultrabook. It features a 13.3-inch display and magnesium and aluminum chassis. Starting at $769, which is about average for an Ultrabook, it weighs 3.6 pounds and measures 0.71 inches thick. The base model includes an Intel Core i5 dual-core processor; higher-end models are available with Core i7 dual-cores. The base model also includes a hybrid 320GB or 500GB hard drive (w/ a 32GB SSD cache); higher-end models are available with up to a 512GB Solid State Drive (SSD).
The T13 has an estimated battery life up to seven hours, 30 minutes. The T13 includes many more ports than a typical Ultrabook including HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, a memory card reader, and a USB 3.0 port.
E Series, S Series
The E series is the most basic VAIO notebook available with 14- and 15.5-inch screen sizes. It has a mostly plastic design with aluminum accents and starts at $499. Low-end Intel Pentium dual-core processors and more powerful Core i3 and i5 processors are offered. The E series is available in three colors: pink, white, and black. The 14-inch model weighs 5.3 lbs, the 15.5-inch model 6 lbs; battery life is estimated to be 5 hours, 30 minutes.
The S series is a higher-end notebook available in 13.3- and 15.5-inch screen sizes. It starts at $799 and has better specifications including up to seven hours of battery life, a backlit keyboard, a starting weight of about 1/3 pound less than the E series, and on the 15.5-inch model, a far better display ? a full 1080p resolution and IPS panel. An IPS panel means better color reproduction and viewing angles (most notebooks come with TN-type displays).
The Z Series is Sony's highest-end notebook and features a carbon fiber construction. It has a 13.1-inch display with full 1080p resolution, a 2.6 lb weight, 0.66-inch thickness, and available black and gold colors. It starts at $1,599.
