Western Digital released a lineup of external hard drives today that feature an improved design, a storage capacity boost, more security features, and automatic backup with the company's next-generation My Passport software. This is the first time WD has offered a 2TB storage capacity for an external hard drive. The new design wraps the hard drives in an enclosure and are available in five different colors: white, black, silver, blue, and red. Password protection and hardware encryption are also included.
The exterior of the drives features a scratch resistant finish and they all come with USB 3.0 connectivity and USB 2.0 backward compatibility. The WD My Passport software allows installation of all the features or just the items that are needed. Users can also choose to use the drive without the software.
As far as form factor goes, even the 2TB capacity is what WD calls "pocket sized."
Pricing and Availability
The Western Digital My Passport portable hard drives are available now from the WD store and from select retailers. They come with a 2-year limited warranty.
